Getting Married in Jamaica
General information for visitors planning to legally marry in Jamaica, including waiting period, required documents, blood test information, and popular local wedding superstitions.
Waiting Period
Visitors can be married just 24 hours after arriving in Jamaica, provided prior application has been made for a marriage licence.
Blood Test
No blood test is required.
Documentation Required
- Proof of citizenship — certified copy of Birth Certificate
- Parents' written consent if under 18 years of age
- Proof of divorce, if applicable — original certificate of divorce
- Certified copy of death certificate for widow or widower
N.B. These documents must be translated to English and notarized where necessary.
Please review the requirements for marrying in a foreign country. If your country’s language
is not English and your country does not have an Embassy or High Commission in Jamaica,
you may have other requirements for legalising your documents.
Superstitions Around A Jamaican Wedding
- Don’t wear black, red or purple. This applies to both the bridal party and guests. These colours are seen as funeral colours and are considered a sign of bad luck.
- If it rains, you will have a problematic marriage.
- If dogs eat a slice of your cake, you will have a miserable marriage.
- Wearing a ring on your “wedding finger” before you get married will reduce your chances of ever getting married to zero.
- If the bride cries on her wedding day, you’ll have a tear-free marriage.
